Taliban turns back Iranian aid for war-stricken Afghans Tehran, Oct 24, IRNA -- The Taliban militia has turned back a consignment of Iranian relief aid for displaced Afghans in Herat, announced the United Nations Information Center on Tuesday. The Iranian consignment, which was being transported in 20 trucks, will make another attempt to deliver the aid on Wednesday, a U.N. spokesman said. Tight security in Herat has also hampered relief operations in the region, the U.N. spokesman added. Despite the difficulties, all efforts are being made to distribute food in Afghanistan. Following fresh wave of Afghan refugees towards the Iranian border, U.N. World Food Program is trying to provide refugees with suitable relief. Meanwhile, the United Nations Children's Fund has warned about the onset of cold season in Afghanistan and stressed the urgent need for humanitarian relief for the refugees |
