UN Sanctions to Aggravate Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan ISLAMABAD (Jan. 22) XINHUA - Pakistani President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar cautioned Monday that the recent U.N. sanctions on Afghanistan would further increase poverty and hunger in the war- ravaged country, Associated Press of Pakistan reported. "The sanctions would not only increase economic problems for the Afghan people, but will also bring difficulties in bringing peace in that country," the report quoted Tarar as saying in a local function here. The world community, he added, should look into the problems of Afghan people on humanitarian grounds and must constructively engage in Afghanistan in the interest of regional peace and stability. Pakistan, he said, always stands by the world community and the United Nations for bringing peace worldwide, but it also hopes that the human suffering of the people would not be ignored, the report said. |
