Tuesday, January 16, 2001

DUSHANBE, January 16 (Itar-Tass) -- Three Afghan nationals were detained by Russian border troops on Monday evening after the transgressors had crossed the border into Tajikistan at its stretch guarded by the Moscow border troops detachment.

The border guards seized a radio station and a small amount of Afghan money and brought the transgressors to the headquarters for investigation.

Also on Monday evening, a meeting was organised on the initiative of the Russian border troops with representatives of Afghan border authorities, during the course of the meeting the Russian party expressed protest over the increasingly frequent cases of border transgression at the border stretches guarded by the Russian troops.

A spokesman for the command of the Russian border troops stationed in Tajikistan told Itar-Tass on Tuesday that two other Afghan citizens had been detained last week upon crossing the border from Afghanistan into Tajikistan.
