Congressmen visit refugee camp

PESHAWAR, Feb 24: The visiting team of three US Congressmen visited the new Shamshatu Afghan refugee camp and distributed relief goods among the refugees, some 26 kilometres in the south- east of Peshawar on Friday.

Senior officials of the provincial government and the Afghan refugee commission, Peshawar, accompanied the Congressmen including Democrats David Bonior and Jim McDermott and Republican Joseph Pitts.

Extraordinary security arrangements had been made at the passage leading to and around the Shamshatu camp where the US Congressmen team also distributed relief goods including tents and blankets among the refugees.

According to sources, the US team, on this occasion, was given a briefing about the refugees and the details of relief work financed by UN agencies.
