Peshawar protesters set cinema on fire

PESHAWAR : More demonstrations were staged in Peshawar on Wednesday to protest the blasphemous letter published in The Frontier Post while in an apparently unrelated case a cinema house was attacked and put on fire. The overworked Peshawar police teargassed and baton-charged protesters mostly belonging to religio-political parties in the Kabuli Chowk area and arrested four of them. A press note by Peshawar's district magistrate said the law-enforcing agencies took the action when an unruly mob started looting and damaging private property.

However, a JUI-S leader Syed Yousaf Shah blamed the members of the intelligence agencies for the incident. He said activists of the religious groups could not even imagine looting or damaging private property.

The storming of the Shama cinema in Peshawar quickly turned into a controversy with its owner Bashir Ahmad Bilour, who is also a senior leader of the nationalist Awami National Party, blaming the Jamaat-e-Islami and its students wing, Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT), for the attack and the latter rejecting the allegation...
