Karzai wants good relations with Iran
Frontier Post 12/10/2001 10:06:22 AM

TEHRAN (Agencies): The leader of the Afghan interim government Hamid Karzai called Iran a brotherly and neighborly country in an interview with the Iranian national radio."We pay tribute to the role Iran has played in Afghanistan and hope for the continuation of amicable relations between Kabul and Tehran," Karzai said in Farsi.

"The Islamic Republic is a neighborly country and a brother of Afghanistan and we have lived in harmony together for centuries," he said.

"We hope that Iran's leaders and people contribute to the reestablishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan and to the country's progress." It was Karzai's first address to Iran since being chosen to lead the new Afghan coalition government on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Iran welcomead the new Afghan government and said it had no objection to Karzai, a member of the country's majority Pashtun ethnic group, heading the interim government.
