Afghan refugees facing hunger
BBC News

Thousands of Afghan refugees rehoused temporarily on the islands of River Pyanj on the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan are reported to be facing a severe shortage of food and medicines.

Correspondents from the Russian Itar-Tass news agency, who visited one of the centres there, say the refugees used up most of their food supplies two weeks ago.

They said there are few , if any, medicines left to treat those suffering from diseases such as cholera and malaria.

The news agency quoted a commander at the camp as saying a lack of adequate supplies of international aid was to blame for the crisis.
