Concern grows for Afghan refugees - BBC

Aid agencies are warning that the plight of up to ten thousand refugees stranded on the borders between Tajikistan and Afghanistan could worsen as winter deepens.

The refugees fled the latest bout of fighting over the past three weeks in Afghanistan and are now camped out on marshy, uninhabited islands in a no-mans land between the two countries.

Aid agencies say they have found it hard to reach them.

A joint mission, which includes non government organisations, is carrying out an assessment of the situation.

A spokesman for the mission says if snow comes, the refugees have limited shelter and food supplies.
