Uzbeks seek Indian anti-terrorism cooperation

The Uzbek president, Islam Karimov, has urged India to cooperate in the fight against international terrorism in Afghanistan and other parts of Central Asia.

Mr Karimov was speaking in Delhi, on the third day of his official visit to India.

He said international terrorism was being sponsored by the Taleban leadership in Afghanistan, and by what he called surrounding areas, in what correspondents say is a reference to India's regional rival, Pakistan.

Mr Karimov said that in addition to terrorism, Uzbekistan and India faced common threats, such as religious extremism, drug trafficking and organised crime.

He warned of grave consequences if those problems weren't tackled.
