ISLAMABAD (NNI): Afghan opposition force launched an offensive in the province of Saripool overnight, succeeding in repelling the Taliban armies from various towns, an opposition commander said Sunday.

The Taliban suffered heavy casualties including 15 dead in the towns of Gusfandy and Zareh of Saripul province, opposition spokesman Saad Mohsini said.

Mohsini said 40 Taliban fighters were also captured and are currently held as POWs.

In addition, the opposition forces managed to capture large quantities of weaponry and ammunition. The Taliban were forced to leave behind heavy engineering equipment, he said. The front lines have now moved to the Akgunbat area of the province.
