13 killed on Afghan-Tajik border

Russian border guards stationed in Tajikistan are reported to have shot dead thirteen alleged drug traffickers on the frontier with Afghanistan.

The Itar Tass news agency said the shooting began after a group carrying two kilogrammes of heroin tried to cross into Tajik territory.

The border guards are frequently involved in encounters of this kind, but this is the largest number of alleged smugglers to have be killed in a single incident for some months.
