Kabul blast - DAWN editorial - 7/12 MYSTERY surrounds the bomb blast that on Monday ripped off a portion of the roof of the Pakistan embassy in Kabul and broke a few dozen windows in the neighbourhood. Mercifully, none was hurt, mainly because the explosion occurred early in the morning, but there was considerable damage to the embassy's visa section. While Islamabad has condemned the blast and demanded of the Taliban government that "the perpetrators of this heinous crime" be apprehended and punished, it is difficult to see how a regime engaged in a seemingly endless and debilitating civil war can go about doing this. An even more pertinent question is: who precisely will gain from a bombing of the Pakistan embassy. The problem perhaps arises from Pakistan's perceived closeness to the Taliban regime and the consequent reservations which Afghanistan's anti-Taliban factions have about Pakistan. No wonder, Kabul was quick to blame the Northern Alliance for Monday's blast. In its turn, the Northern Alliance, too, wasted no time in blaming the Taliban regime for the outrage. The Northern Alliance may have some reservations about Pakistan, but it is difficult to see how it can hope to promote its cause by bombing the Pakistan embassy. The same holds good for the Taliban regime. Could there be a third party - or the work of a demented individual? An answer would perhaps be available only after the Kabul authorities complete their investigation and make its findings known. In the meantime, the least the Taliban authorities can do is to tighten the security around the embassy of a country which has done so much for the Afghan cause since the Soviets came marching in on Christmas eve in 1979. |
