Iran sends humanitarian aid to Afghanistan TEHRAN, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Iran has sent some 110 tonnes of humanitarian aid to refugees in areas held by opposition forces in neighbouring Afghanistan, the official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday. It quoted an official of Iran's Red Crescent Society as saying the supplies of food, clothes, and medicine had been sent to northern Afghanistan via Tajikistan. Iran, like most other countries, does not recognise the Taleban government that controls 90 percent of Afghanistan. Tehran regards deposed President Burhanuddin Rabbani as Afghanistan's legitimate leader and has close ties with opposition forces controlling areas in northern Afghanistan. Only Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have recognised the government of the Taleban which swept to power in 1996. |
