Taliban reported challenged by Afghan tribes

Reports from Afghanistan say tribal leaders in a remote area of the south-east have threatened to rise up against the authority of the Taleban movement.

Travellers arriving in the capital, Kabul from Khost province say the dispute flared up when local people began and ended the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan a day before the Taleban.

The Taleban authorities responded by arresting a local religious leader.

Tribal elders are now said to have given the Taleban two weeks to restore land rights and spend tax revenues on local projects.

Taleban ministers have categorically denied reports of unrest, though they agree that the local governor has been replaced.
