attempt to smuggle wheat to afghanistan foiled islamabad, dec. 19, irna -- authorities in pakistan have foiled an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of wheat flour to afghanistan under the cover of united nations aid, press reports indicated here on saturday. a joint team of pakistan army and police personnel seized five trucks and a wagon, loaded with 1250 wheat bags in nasir bagh area near peshawar on friday, it added. the smugglers were reportedly using fake permit of the u.n. world food program. there has been no comment by the u.n. pakistan has tightened monitoring at borders with afghanistan to check wheat smuggling to the neighboring war-torn country because of shortage at home. demonstrations are being held in north west frontier and south-western balochistan provinces against shortage of wheat flour. one person was killed and five injured when police opened fire on wheat flour seekers in peshawar three days ago. md/ys end ::irna 19/12/99 11:00 |
